Rising to 1,467 meters above the Caribbean Sea, La Soufrière (“La Vieille Dame”) is an active stratovolcano nestled within the protected 30,000-hectare Guadeloupe National Park.
1. Summit Ascent Route (Chemin des Dames)
- Starting Point: Bains Jaunes parking lot (elevation 950m), where natural sulfur hot thermal pools await weary hikers on their return.
- Duration: Approximately 3.5 to 4.5 hours round-trip.
- Difficulty: Moderate to demanding, with rocky scrambles near the summit plateau.
- Highlights: Passing through humid cloud forest, climbing the volcanic dome, and observing steaming fumaroles venting sulfuric vapors.
2. Essential Safety Rules
- Weather Caution: Summit conditions can change within minutes. Check the volcanic observatory (OVSG-IPGP) bulletin before departure.
- Proper Footwear: Sturdy hiking boots with vibram soles are mandatory; volcanic trails are frequently wet and slippery.
- Protection: Carry windproof rain jackets and sufficient drinking water (at least 2 liters per person).
